in blog on 27/10/2021

If you wander how to be an illustrator then you need inspiration, the right atmosphere, a specific task sequence, and feedback. All components are described below.

Let’s say you love to draw and would like to become an illustrator, but you are still at the very beginning of the journey and do not know where to start. You do not yet have a portfolio, your site, a developed style, an idea of how and where to move on. But it is quite possible that you already have another specialty, work, family, children, and a bunch of completely non-creative responsibilities. You have little free time, and you do not understand from which side to approach this huge world. And do you even have a place in this world.

Learning cycle:

  • inspiration, interest and curiosity about a specific topic,
  • process, gaining practical knowledge and personal experience,
  • transformation, skill formation (behavior change)

It is important to create a working atmosphere around and enjoy the present. Creating something from an idea is magic, and you have to pay for it with attention and diligence.

It is enough to understand your own characteristics and find a rhythm of regular work on all aspects. First of all, this feeling and idea is what the author wants to convey. In terms of technical drawing skills, it is worth starting with something simple and trying to do it briefly and often. Where attention is directed – that’s where change happens

How to be an illustrator  – Feedback

A look from the outside is irreplaceable – but first of all, you need to listen to your feelings. Another point of view helps to see the usual picture in volume. And from a conscientious viewer, both praise and criticism are for the good. Therefore – do, show, repeat. It is useful to alternate stages of personal creativity with joint projects. The main thing is to enjoy.

It is important for a commercial illustrator to define the genre and context in which they want to work. Study the environment where this illustration is in demand and form a proposal for it. Many illustrators promote their portfolios on their own – this will require the skill of communicating with the client and the ability to customize the process. In any case, experience with a client and the ability to quickly adapt your talent to the task at hand are important.
